You are absolutely right! I have found Twitter has become important both professionally and personally. I actually just finished a set of three posts on this very subject.

I found so long as you treat it like your local coffee shop rather than an advertising medium, it works beautifully. This doesn't mean you can't promote your own products/services, just that it requires balance.

To get a good start on Twitter, I recommend setting up your profile (with an image of your smiling face!) and a few Tweets that add value to others before making your connections. When others go to your page to see what you are about, you'll have a few tweets to show them what they can expect from you.

Tools such as Twitter search (http://search.twitter.com/), and a few others help connect you with like minded people and your target audience.

Good luck!

twit [ twit ]

Definition:

offensive term: an offensive term that deliberately insults somebody's commonsense or consideration for others ( slang insult )

Michael,

I'm living proof of what you say here. Without Twitter, I would not have found your blog and this post. I do wonder about your use of "Twit." Many of us call a sharing on Twitter a "Tweet." Anyway, whatever we call it, Twitter is a great asset for learning and for getting noticed.
